Updated-Pharmacology CVS Mnemonics

CVS Mnemonics from GRG Pharmacology

Hi Guys, in this post I will be sharing the mnemonics for CVS Pharmacology which I had created during my 2nd Year from GRG Notes. First go through the GRG Lectures of CVS, then read the notes thoroughly again and again. Although, I am sharing some additional mnemonics to make things simpler. Note that all the additional details, properties, and adverse effects of drugs are solely taken from notes of GRG.

 (attaching a picture of one of the most uncanny and my eerily favourite drug!)

 Don't forget to follow my blog via the follow button given at the end of the page and subscribe to notifications, as I will be regularly adding new mnemonics for every unit ranging from CNS,ANS and Anti Microbials etc.

Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors(PDEI):

amrINone/milrINone: These two drugs are ionodilators

IN stands for ionodilators.

Pronounce Ionodilators as I know. You know something when you are right. Hence, Ionotropics are used for Right heart failure.

Digitoxin is a toxin so it is metabolised by liver. As toxins are usually metabolised by Liver.

diGOXIN:

Focus on the Capital letters:

G = Gynaecomastia,

O =only Ionotropic drug that can be given ORally, if a drug is given orally the most common side effect it can cause are, nausea and vomiting

XIN= Xanthopsia

Also, usually digits(fingers) are used to maintain rhythm in performing various day to night activities ;)  so Digoxin’s Digi can remind you of aRRHYTHMIAS.

Drugs increasing Digitalis toxicity:

Q?VAT!( When digits become toxic, you are questioning(Q?)the Modi Government why it has imposed a VAT)

Q= Quinidine

V= Verapamil

A= Amiodarone

T= Thiazides

Beta blockers used in CHF= MCB(miniature circuit breaker used in hostel and homes)

Metoprolol

Carvedilolol

Bisoprolol

ACE inhibitor drugs:

Ek NALA (Enalapril) tha, jisma ek Parinda(Perindopril) Lyse(Destroy,Lisinopril) ho raha tha, to meine usko, CAP (Captopril) mein daalke bacha lia, isse RAM (Ramipril) bhagwaan khush ho gaye.

ARBs easy to remember so I am not adding mnemonics for it.

One important ARB is Telmesartan. Focus on the word 'Telme'. This drug is literally asking you, to tell me the advantageous benefits upon consumption of it. The main benefit is this drug reverses the insulin resistance by stimulating PPAR-gamma.

Losartan causes lowering of uric acid.

Newer drugs:

Brain Natrieuretic Peptide causes Natriuresis. Natriuresis is loss of Natrium(sodium)+ uresis(water) in urine.

Nesiritide:

Ne: Newer drug, recombinant of BNP

SIRI: When you give a command to SIRI,(Apple's voice assistant) it response is for a very short time, ie, response is ACUTE.Hence, Nesiritide is given for acute CHF. Also since the response of SIRI is short, the drug is also short acting.

Tide: Tide in the last name indicates peptide, so obviously you cant give it orally, its given via IV.

Remember that PRILs are ACE inhibitors and NEP inhibitors are TRILs(PANT).

conIVaptan: given by IV route.

TOLvaptan: your kidney via formation of many cysts,(Polycystic Kidney Disease)became too heavy so you started weighing it( tum use TOL ne lage)

Among Nitrates, IMN has the MINimum first pass metabolism.

Dihydropyridines:

Amla(Amlodipine) ko knife(Nifedipine) cut karke tumne usme Cleavage(Clevidipine) bana dia.

Among DHPs, Cleaved Knife(clevi and Nife) are not used in angina.

NIMOdipine.: Focus on the Word Nemo. Finding nemo was movie related to aquatic and POOL life. Think of haemorrage, in which there is a collection of POOL of blood. Hence this is a cerebroselective CCBs used in subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Watch Finding Nemo | Prime Video

cLiNidipine: Blocks both L type and N type Calcium channels.

Adverse effects of Calcium channel Blockers:(CCBs)

C= constipation

C= cir mein dard= headache

B=Bubble Gums chabake you will get GUM hypertrophy.

Nicorandil:

Ni:Nitric Oxide releaser

Pronounce CO as KO=K(potassium) (O)opener.

The word Nicorandil also contains Randi, many times sex workers and prostitutes develop genital ulcers due to STDs. Hence one of the most common side effect of Nicorandil is Mouth Ulcers.

Netarsudil=  Netra(eye in Sanskrit),treatment of Glaucoma in eye

RaNOlazine: Also says NO to sodium Channel( Na channel blocker)

Remember Thiazides are used in Hypertension and Loop dieuretics for Heart Failure.

Sodium Nitroprusside:

Focus on p russi.. : President of Russia(Prusside) declared emergency when tensions between nations arose. Hence it is used in Hypertensive Emergencies.

hydrALazaine: AL stands for Acetylation, ie, it is a drug metabolised by Acetylation.

Potassium Channel Openers:

MDH Masale.

M=Minoxidil

D= Diazoxide

H= Hydralazine

Minoxidil:

Minoxi: A girl named meenakshi had too much hair growth- Hirsutism, used in Alopecia.

Dil: you need to supplement her with gifts to win her DIL, supplementation occurs via sulphonation(minoxidil sulphate)

diazoxIDE: IDE stands for Increase Decrease karta hai, hence used in Insulinoma.

metHYLdopa: HYL stands for HaemoLYtic Anaemia

Statins:

Static: can cause static of heart and muscles= MYOPATHY

Tin= Taken in Night

S= sugar increases = causes diabetes mellitus

Tat of sTATins= Tatty producing organ is Liver= causes Hepatotoxicity

Remember statins always end with “vastatin” suffix. So we need to focus only on the prefixes.

Special Statins:

SimLo(Simvastatin and Lovastatin)= papa ne bola bete SIM le LO, which cause detrimental effect on the mental health and CNS of Beta= statins having maximum CNS penetration

RosU(Rosuvastatins)=Ro ro ke longest aasu nikalaa(longest acting)

Pra(Pravastatin)= Pra means brother in Punjabi= brothers have two functions = They decrease clashes, interactions and fights between other people(less interactions with meals and with other drugs due to negligible metabolism by CYP enzymes) = brothers also go to gym and build muscles (risk of myopathy is less)

Pravastatin - Wikipedia

(Pravastatin)

The Only Bile Acid Binding Agent that can be orally consumed is Cholesevalam=iska sevam kar sakte hai, rest are not easily palatable.

Side effects of NIACIN:

NIACIN=acid increases = hyperuricemia

NIACIN=causes insulin resistance

MIPOPMERSEN: Antisense oligonucleotide of APO B100
